Horticulture combines sciences, technologies, and arts for the development, sustainable production, marketing, and utilization of high-value, intensively grown plants. As a branch of agriculture, it deals with garden crops, generally fruits, vegetables, medicinal herbs, flowers, and ornamental plants. Horticulture also deals with the need of human society to preserve plants after harvest as well as breed and introduce new varieties. It is at the heart of a society's food security and the linchpin of agriculture.
